LANL FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP
This spring, the LANL Foundation supported a Multipleminds program with Española Valley High School, entitled:
“The Science Documentary, Producing the 21st Century Multimedia Research Essay.”
Students in the program were trained by Multipleminds instructors in sessions for the Winter-Spring semester.
A State-of-the-Art Portfolio of Scientific Research by Youth for Youth
During the program, every student completed science documentaries that are relevant to
21st century society and their peers.
Participating students presented their documentaries to fellow students and shared
with them how the program influenced their outlook on science and learning.
Several participants shared how learning through science research using digital media
technology transformed their views about the functions of science and technology in
today’s world in an article published May 22, 2008 in the Rio Grande SUN.
An Integrated and Connected Approach to Science Education
The lessons are guided by the Helical Learning Strategy.
Likened to the theory of knowledge, learning in this model begins with simple and familiar concepts and activities and cumulatively grows into student-driven and produced professionally-oriented science documentary projects.
Activities are structured along four stages – PLAY, EXPLORE, INTEGRATE, and IMAGINE.
With this learning strategy, students are individually guided with scaffoldings so they can successfully complete their projects,
discover their unique voices and abilities and embrace the challenges of producing quality-oriented and relevant scientific documentaries.
LANL Community Office Partnership
The LANL Community office is supporting the training of a limited number of K-12 teachers
in Santa Fe and Rio Arriba Counties.
This past April, Multipleminds implemented a week-long professional development program
that provided 7 teachers with a hands-on and multi-sensory program using digital media
technology on how to expand the research essay into a movie documentary.
Interested teachers may contact the Multipleminds office in Santa Fe at 505 983 1992.
